I’ve Been Aware Of Pollution Problems My Whole Life, but…

My whole life I’d known we faced problems from pollution, global warming, and more, but I thought innovation, technology, and markets would solve them. I thought only governments and corporations could act on the scale we needed. As I grew, I came to value responsibility and accountability. Even if I couldn’t fix the world, I could take responsibility for my waste.

My Mental Shift Was The Biggest Change

In 2014, I challenged myself to avoid buying packaged food for a week, expecting deprivation, sacrifice, and likely failure. Instead, I learned to shop and cook. With practice, I went from emptying my garbage weekly to monthly to annually to where I now take two years to fill a load. I saved money and time, connecting more with the community. Taking responsibility for more, I challenged myself to avoid flying for a year. I expected to find it impossible since my paycheck and time with family required flying. I was pleasantly surprised to find I grew from and enjoyed the experience. I haven’t flown since March 2016.

Bigger than the physical changes was the mental shift. I expected burden, chore, deprivation, and sacrifice. Instead, I found joy, freedom, fun, community, connection, meaning, and purpose.

Why did I expect to suffer? Where was the message that we would wish we had changed earlier? No one was leading in sustainability. There was no Mandela of the environment.

Why Am I doing This?

As crazy as it sounded if I felt that role was important and no one else was filling it, I would. I would become the Mandela of the environment–to lead people to want to change, to create new role models, stories, and beliefs. To change the culture.

Mission

To bring leadership to sustainability and to lead people to love acting in stewardship of nature.

My mission is to change American and global culture from expecting stewardship to bring burden, chore, deprivation, and sacrifice to expecting it to create joy, freedom, fun, community, connection, meaning, and purpose. The This Sustainable Life family of podcasts, courses, and books are strategic parts of that mission.

We hope you’ll adopt the mission.

How to act and lead

Facts, figures, instructions, and “here’s one little thing you can do for the environment” change some people, but not many. On the other hand, we tend to act like the five people around us. Most of us will change when the people around us do. Some of us want to lead. We want to change first. This Sustainable Life teaches you how to lead yourself and others. Systemic change begins with personal transformation. You’ll love the transformation. You’ll find people around you were waiting for someone to change first so they could follow.

After you lead yourself and a few friends and family to change, you’ll feel like you’re swimming downstream instead of up. You’ll wish you had started earlier. You’ll find meaning in all those facts and figures, which will now motivate you more. It may be hard to imagine, but you’ll come to look back at some of your current indulgences as addictions, with disgust.

At our end, we’ll keep working with more and more people, especially world-renowned ones. When I walk Oprah through The Spodek Method of sharing her environmental values, acting on them for her intrinsic reasons, and sharing her results, ten million people will be one-fifth of the way to acting. We’ll keep bringing more renowned people to share.

We’ll create a culture of stewardship and sustainability.
